This
section, on the full version CD, contains notes
and exercises about quality in design and technology and
about the checks and tests that may be carried out to
determine the quality of products, systems and
environments.
Quality
Notes
Quality
in design and technology relates to the standard of
excellence of designs, of materials, of systems, of
manufacturing and of products.
Excellence
means different things to different people, so if
designers and manufacturers are to work to specific
standards, specific criteria by which excellence can be
measured must be stated.
These specifications must describe the quality
required for all parts of a product.
Specifications
must be given for the design, the type and quality of
materials to be used, the systems employed in
manufacturing, safety measures and quality control
measures.
Specifications
have a direct effect on the quality of the final product
if the designer and manufacturers achieve the specified
standards. Failure to meet specified standards in any
area of the design and manufacturing process is likely
to result in:
-
a
poor quality product;
-
a
product that is difficult, expensive or unsafe to
make;
-
a
product that is difficult, expensive or unsafe to
use.
The notes
in the Quality section of the Design and Resistant
Materials Technology CD also describe the various
processes involved with:
Quality
Exercises
This section, on the full
version CD, contains exercises about the quality of
designs, materials, processes and systems. For
example:
Quality of material and
manufacture.
Imagine that
you were responsible for buying metal drawer
slides for a furniture manufacturer.
The furniture
manufacturer wants to guarantee the proper
working of all components for at least ten
years.
- Describe what the drawer slide
in the illustration has to do.
- Describe a test that would
demonstrate how well the drawer slide works.
- Use notes and sketches to
design a machine that could test drawer slides.
- Explain how the test could
prove that the drawer slide would, or would not
work properly for at least ten years.
