Description of the compression moulding process used to mould Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) |
||||||||||||||||||
Materials used for compression moulding are either in the form of a dough-like substance or in sheet form. Both forms are composed of resin, chopped glass fibres, a catalyst and a release agent. Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) is in the form of a plastic sheet that has not been cured, i.e. finally hardened. Shaping of SMC is achieved by using a compression moulding machine consisting of a "plug" and "yoke". To mould the plastic into shape, a sheet of Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC) material is placed between the heated plug and yoke of a compression moulding machine. |
As the plug is lowered into the yoke, it squashes the SMC and forces it to take up the shape of the space between the plug and yoke. Heat from the compression moulding machine cures and hardens the plastic. When the SMC has cured and hardened sufficiently, the plastic moulded product is ejected from the mould. A more detailed description of the compression moulding process using sheet moulding compound is in our new Plastics Module. Learn about PlasticsWe use animations and supporting technology notes to describe plastics and plastics processes. Animations illustrate plastics processes in probably the most clear way possible, making plastics processes easy to understand, easy to learn and easy to remember. Our plastics technology notes and animations describe all the major processes including:
Plastics ModuleOur new Plastics Module developed from the work in the KS3 and KS4 D&T packages. It is a complete package that includes:
To make teaching easier, the technology theory notes and exercises are in digital format, making them suitable for computers and whiteboards; and in PDF format, which makes it simple to print and duplicate A4 theory notes and worksheets. |
Comprehensive and economical D&T software bundleThree great software products covering the design aspects, the resistant materials aspects and product design aspects of KS3 and KS4 D&T courses. Our new D&T software bundle includes: The three packages contain a wealth of technology theory notes, animations of D&T processes, design exercises, design analysis exercises and technology exercises.
