Rendering: colouring and shading

Illustrating a product that does not yet exist is one of the jobs that a designer has to do.

Line drawings give people a good idea of what a product will look like but it is only when light, shade and colour are applied to the drawing, that the drawing looks realistic.

Adding light, shade and colour to drawings is called rendering.  To be able to render drawings so that they look realistic takes skill and lots of practice.  Use the line drawing above to develop your rendering skills.  A rendered drawing is next to the line drawing to guide you.

You do not have to use the same colours.  The aim of the exercise is to develop your rendering skills so that when you apply your skills to your own designs, they will look realistic.

You may print the pages or you may copy the line drawings.
