Finding money to
pay for the Design & Resistant Materials
Technology CD
We
understand that Design and Technology
departments may be on a tight budget, so our aim is to
give you extremely good value for money and if at all
possible, to reduce your costs. The CD is
designed to reduce your photocopying bill and to be
capable of being customised and updated with new
information without the need to buy new versions.
Sounds
great but how can we afford it?
Some suggestions for funding are
listed below.
-
Your
normal departmental budget. Money may
be saved by off-setting the
cost of the CD against your normal photocopying
costs. The cost of making a copy of
the CD is about the same as a few A4 photocopies, so
think of all the time, effort and money you will be
saving by issuing every D&T student with their
own CD. Furthermore, if you "paste"
your department's work into the relevant sections of
the notes and exercises on the CD before you
duplicate it, ( i.e. save the work on the CD to your hard
drive, add your extra bits, change the headers and
footers) then you could have a really comprehensive
set of notes and exercises for your students, not to
mention, the most comprehensive Departmental
Handbook in your school.
-
Your
school's ICT budget. It could be argued
that by putting the work on the Design and Resistant
Materials Technology CD onto the school's ICT network, so
that all students in the school have access to it,
the cost of the CD should be borne in part, if not
wholly, by the ICT budget.
-
Your
school's library budget. A percentage
of the school's library budget is probably assigned
to textual materials for the Design and Technology
Department. The
Design and Resistant Materials CD is the most cost
effective way that your school can ensure that
all students have access to D&T materials at
school and at home. The free
updates sent to your school every term will ensure
that there will be a regular supply
of new notes and exercises. The
notes and exercises on the CD can be printed
to make a book of approximately 330 A4 pages, (more,
when including the updates).
-
Your
school's cover budget. The Design and
Resistant Materials Technology CD will enable
teachers responsible for cover (for absent
colleagues) to set work easily for students.
Selected parts of the Design and Resistant
Materials Technology CD can be printed onto A4 sheets
from the CD or from your school's network.
Alternatively, "chapters" could be printed
to make A4 booklets. These booklets, if kept with the people
responsible for cover, would ensure that
cover materials are always at hand.
-
Your
school's Equal Opportunities budget.
The work on the Design and Resistant Materials
Technology CD will give all students access to
material that is both cross curricular and suitable
for a range of abilities, interests and ages.
The materials have been specifically produced using
Microsoft Word so that schools can easily customise
and differentiate it to match the individual needs
and capabilities of the students that will use it.
-
Your
school's Curriculum Development budget.
The Design and Resistant Materials Technology CD is
a step forward in the way that Design and Technology
may be taught. The work on the CD gives all
pupils a vast range of exercises that they can
engage in individually and with the help of their
teachers and parents. The aim is
that students will work quickly using notes and
sketches to answer questions, so that the focus of
their work will be on the development of their
D&T capability rather than on the preparation of
a few beautifully presented "design
sheets". The notes and exercises are
designed to enable students to work independently,
at their own pace and to research information from a
number of sources.
-
Your
Parent/Teacher Association (PTA).
Parents, quite rightly, are the people most
concerned about their children's education and the
resources available to them. Your PTA should
have absolutely no trouble in raising the cost of
the Design and Resistant Materials Technology CD,
especially when they learn that it will benefit
the whole school for years to come.
-
Other
Sources. Advisory teachers and the
staff responsible for curriculum development / ICT /
library and equal opportunities initiatives in your
school and in your borough will be able to tell you
about funding from external sources.
