Energy From Coal
Describe the benefits we get from using coal and the environmental effects of mining and burning coal.

Energy From Gas
Describe the benefits we get from using gas and the environmental effects of the use of natural gas.
http://www.gas-guide.org.uk/science.html

Energy From Oil
Describe the benefits we get from oil based products and the environmental effects of drilling for crude oil, processing it and using oil based products.

The Greenhouse Effect
Use notes and sketches to describe what has become known as the greenhouse effect.  You may research information from a number of sources including the following link: http://www.bbc.co.uk/climate/evidence/greenhouse_effect_img.shtml

Greenhouse Gases
List the gases that have become known as greenhouse gases and describe their effects on our atmosphere.

Climate Change
Describe what is meant by climate change and explain why some people may be very concerned about its effects.

Global Warming
Describe what are believed to be the possible effects of Global Warming.

Fossil Fuels
List the fossil fuels; describe how they are extracted from the earth and how they are used as sources of energy.

Wind Energy
Describe how energy from the wind may be harnessed and converted into two other forms of energy.  Explain the difference between a wind turbine and a wind farm.

Wind Farms
Research the evidence for and against the use of wind farms.  Write a summary of your findings.

Some evidence suggests that wind farms can pose three major problems for birds:

  • disturbance;

  • habitat loss or damage;

  • and collision.

Use notes and sketches to describe how this problem can be minimised or eliminated completely.

Explain why the positioning of a wind farm is important.

Explain why wind farms are positioned:

  • on open plains;

  • on hilltops;

  • out at sea.

Explain what the polluting effects (if any) of wind farms are likely to be.

Design Exercise
Design a wind turbine that could be made from materials readily available in a school D&T workshop.  The wind turbine should be capable of powering a small electric lamp bulb.
